Celebrating Our Made in Britain Status: More Than a Century of Medical Education

We are delighted to announce we have achieved Made in Britain status. This is a significant moment for Adam,Rouilly and something we are incredibly proud to celebrate.

British manufacturing isn’t a new direction for us. It’s part of who we are – for more than a century, we’ve been developing and manufacturing products for medical education in the UK, and approximately 97% of our production still takes place here today at our purpose-built facility in Sittingbourne, Kent.

Alongside our Made in Britain status, we are equally excited to have achieved Made in Britain’s Environmental & Social Value (ESV) Certification. For us, this makes the recognition even more rewarding, reflecting not only where we manufacture, but the values behind how we do business. From supporting local and UK suppliers and reducing our environmental impact to developing skills and contributing to the communities around us, these are things we genuinely care about.

What Made in Britain means for our customers

We know from our customers that where our products are made matters. For some of our international customers in particular, knowing an Adam,Rouilly product has been developed and manufactured in the UK is an important part of their decision to buy from us. These are denoted by the Made in Britain logo on the product page on our website, usually prefixed by the code “AR”.

Considerable care and investment in research and development go into our products. We work closely with healthcare professionals and educators to understand the realities of teaching and training, helping us develop products that meet the needs of the people who use them. Most of our products are also backed by a two-year guarantee, demonstrating our commitment to quality.

Keeping the majority of our production in the UK gives us close oversight of the process and enables us to maintain strong relationships with our suppliers. Together with our focus on product support and longevity, this gives customers confidence not only in the provenance of an Adam,Rouilly product, but in the people and expertise behind it.

For NHS organisations and other public sector customers, responsible procurement, resilient supply chains and environmental and social value can also play an important part in purchasing decisions.

Our manufacturing heritage

Adam,Rouilly’s association with medical education dates back to 1918. As medical education evolved, so did our products. In 1931, the Bedford Hospital Demonstration Doll was introduced following collaboration with a clinical tutor at a London Nursing School. By today’s standards this was a very early full-body patient manikin, constructed from rubberised calico and papier-máché.

The products we manufacture today look very different, but that close understanding of medical education continues to inform their development. Working closely with healthcare professionals and educators helps us respond to the challenges of teaching and learning and create products that support the way healthcare professionals are trained.

It is a history we are immensely proud of, and one that makes being officially Made in Britain today all the more special.

UK manufacturing and local supply chains

Making our products in the UK also allows us to work closely with the local and UK-based suppliers who support our production.

This includes packaging supplied by local businesses with an emphasis on sustainable materials. Maintaining strong local supply relationships can help reduce unnecessary transportation, support shorter and more resilient supply chains and contribute to responsible procurement and carbon reduction.

Making products last

Our approach to manufacturing also extends to the working life of our products.

Care and longevity have been associated with Adam,Rouilly products for generations. Through our Reuse, Refurbish, Respect initiative, we look for opportunities to repair, refurbish and reuse products wherever possible.

Extending product life can reduce premature replacement, material consumption and waste, while helping customers gain greater value from their existing equipment. It is another way in which we can make responsible choices about the products we manufacture and the resources that go into them.

Made in Britain, supporting healthcare education worldwide

Today, Adam,Rouilly products are used by healthcare educators around the world. The Made in Britain mark now becomes part of that legacy, connecting our long history of British manufacturing with the products being used to teach and train healthcare professionals today.

We are excited to see the Made in Britain mark carried by our products and to continue a British manufacturing story that has been more than 100 years in the making.
