Adam,Rouilly is best known as a leading supplier of medical equipment and anatomical models covering various body parts and procedures, but did you know that also includes teeth?
As it’s National Toothache Day on February 9th, we thought we’d take the opportunity to highlight some of the work we do to support dentistry.
SOMSO® models we supply are used for training and education in dentistry, and to raise awareness of the importance of good oral hygiene.
We recently provided a large model of a tooth to feature in a new exhibition at Glasgow Science Centre, to help demonstrate the science behind root canal disease – arguably one of the most painful causes of toothache – and its impact on both oral and systemic health.
At 16 times the real size, the MJ9 Right Lower First Molar Model (or dens molaris) makes an interesting centrepiece to the hands-on exhibition, which has been designed by the British Endodontic Society and the University of Glasgow Dental School.
Aptly titled ‘At the Root of It’, the exhibition teaches visitors about the anatomy of teeth and the treatment of endodontic (or root canal) disease.
The giant tooth offers a visual and hands-on way for visitors to grasp the complexity of dental structures, from pulp to enamel.
Housed in an immersive capsule, the exhibit features a dentist simulator and interactive touchscreen, as well as the enlarged MJ8 Lower Jaw of an 18-Year-Old, supplied by Adam,Rouilly. It looks at fundamental biology, innovations in materials and clinical practice and how scientists and dental professionals are constantly innovating to enhance the delivery of care and patient outcomes.
Professor William McLean, President of the British Endodontic Society, and Professor of Endodontology at the University of Glasgow Dental School, spoke about how the exhibition is highlighting the important work being done in this area of dentistry.
He said: “Many elements of the exhibit are representative of the great work being carried out at the University of Glasgow Dental School, an organisation which has made great strides in contributing to our understanding of oral disease and improving the oral health of the nation.”
At the Root of It will remain at the Glasgow Science Centre for the next five to six years, where it could potentially be seen by more than 1.5 million people.
Raising awareness of the importance of oral hygiene

Alongside these models, we also provided the Glasgow Science Centre with the MJ11 Case of Teeth “Keep Your Teeth Healthy” and MJ12 Case of Teeth “Odontopathies” which will help support outreach work in the community, focusing on the importance of dental and oral hygiene.
This is a topic that’s featured heavily in the news in recent months, with research by the House of Commons Library revealing that more than five million children in England haven’t seen an NHS dentist in more than 12 months.
This was despite tooth decay being recognised as the leading cause of hospital admissions for children aged between six and 10.
The British Dental Association is also calling for urgent action on what it describes as a crisis in NHS dentistry, amid four-year waiting lists and 97% of new patients being unable to access care.
Among its key issues that need addressing are workforce retention and expansion – including more funding for training in all areas of dentistry – and a national children’s prevention programme.
Jaw and teeth models for dentistry
We have a whole range of models of teeth and jaws which support the study of dentistry and can be used to help raise awareness of good dental hygiene.
This includes:
- A variety of enlarged individual teeth, such as the Major Molar Tooth With Caries, Lower Incisor and Lower Molar With One Root.
- Sets of teeth, such as Five Models of Teeth, Set of Teeth of an Adult and Case of Teeth
- Full models with jaw bones like the Upper and Lower Jaw, Right Lower Jaw with Muscles, and the Development of a Set of Teeth including four models of an upper and lower jaw at different representative ages.

Other models are excellent as a hands-on resource for teaching oral hygiene and brushing, such as this Model of a Set of Teeth, which is around three times bigger than life size and comes with a large toothbrush.
The teeth and jaw models are all by SOMSO® and made from highly realistic SOMSO-PLAST®.
